Dogfish Head, I love your beers. They are normally full of flavor, well balanced, and delicious. However, I do not like Festina Peche. Festina Peche is one of their seasonal brews and is of the BerlinerWeisse style. From my research, this is pretty true to the style. BerlinerWeisse is known for its tartness. It is traditionally brewed with both ale yeast and lactic acid to produce the acidity present in this beer. Because of this acidity, it would serve very well to cut through some spicy food. It would also serve very well as a beer to bring a white wine drinker into the beer world. But, seeing as how I'm not currently eating and I'm a fan of red wine, this is not a beer for me. It pours pretty clear for a wheat beer. If this is filtered, it's not completely filtered because there is still some wheat haze present. No head to speak of, only a ring around the glass that doesn't stick at all. That's characteristic of wheat beer, so I'm not going to hound on that. The aromas are telltale that this is a tart beer. You can smell the sourness and, well, it's just not that pleasing to my nose. The nose is really reminiscent of a tart white wine, actually. It reminds me of a really tart reisling or pinot grigio. The flavors are pretty disappointing. It's tart and, well, tart. This tastes more like granny smith apple than peach. Actually, it doesn't taste like peach at all. The flavors blast the palate and are gone as soon as they came. There is some lingering fruitiness on the finish, but after you've been assaulted by the sourness, it's pretty hard to appreciate. Keep in mind that I think a lot of people will like this beer. I might even like this beer if I was munching on some hot wings or some spicy Asian food but I would not recommend this to many people as a casual sipping beer. The acidity is far too high for that but would serve well to pair with food. Sorry, Dogfish Head, but this one just isn't for me. |
